CN Day1 PM Recap

In the afternoon, the group headed to the heights of Gatineau Park near the Ski Station Fortune and the biathlon range. The group was split into different teams, mixing athletes from Chelsea Nordiq and Hollyburn for a unique and thrilling Ski Orienteering challenge. This event tested both navigation and orientation skills as athletes raced through unfamiliar terrain to find a series of checkpoints, known as "controls," all while adhering to a strict time limit. The goal was to reach as many controls as possible before the clock ran out and make it back to the finish line. A huge thanks to Duane, Carolyn, Bill, and James for their logistical support in organizing this exciting challenge.

The competition was heightened this week as Chelsea Nordiq’s competition team was joined by Canmore athletes, all racing through the trails in the same challenge. With multiple teams zooming through the snow, there were moments of following, confusion, and some friendly competition. The continuous snowfall made things trickier by covering up the markers, adding another layer of difficulty to the navigation. Despite the challenges, everyone showed impressive teamwork and determination to find the checkpoints!

A special mention goes to Sam, whose incredible talent shone through as he was able to spot an impressive 9 controls — and even an arrow stuck in a tree!

Of course, there were a few epic wipeouts along the way, but luckily the 7cm of fresh snow provided a soft cushion for everyone. It turned into a bit of a competition for the best fall of the day, with Grace and Kiara tying for the honor! A fun and action-packed afternoon all around!

We wrapped up our snowy day with a delicious taste of Quebec tradition—Maple Toffee on Snow. Maple syrup was boiled to a certain temperature and then poured over snow, where it transformed into a delectable toffee treat. It was the perfect way to end an unforgettable day, with a sweet taste of winter and tradition.
